Back to the Blog
Saturday, April 4th, 2009Well after about a 2 month hibernation from blogging, I am back to action here. Sheesh. So what has my last two months looked like? What do my months always look like… Nicki, drums, and computers, and the last few have been no different. Things have been a little slow on the 33Miles front, tough economy and slow times right now, so I’ve had a little break from the road which has turned out to be really nice.
It’s been amazing to be home with Nicki and Preston. I’ve managed to do a lot of website building and of course managed to do a ton of drumming in the past few weeks. I am back to my 15-20 hour drumming weeks, which just rocks!! Right now I am in a major focus on the groove. Working on mostly R&B and Hip-Hop grooves and fills. These used to be my weakest areas of drumming, but after only two months of really digging into the style, I have found that they seemed much harder to play than they really are. Life, Music, and Drums are all very similar in that it’s all about the foundation. Good marriage foundation, good marriage. Good musical foundation, the easier it is to understand all types of music. With drums, it’s really no different. If you have good hands, good feet, good technique, and you work at it all the time, picking up new things is easy because you are simply adding to the foundation you’ve built.
One piece of advice I was offered by my teachers growing up, and I can offer on here, is build your foundation. That means working on just a practice pad sometimes, or spend some hours working on just your feet. If you have a weak place in your foundation adding new styles and new things will be a challenge for you, but with a good starting place, you can literally play anything you can think of.
In just a few short months I’ll be working on demos in Pro Tools out of my garage. It’s been a patience building process to wait for God’s timing on everything, but the end is in sight. I’ll keep you guys posted. Hang in there and keep building your foundation in whatever you may be doing.
